1 week down 19 to go! Today was my first rest day and it was great for all of us to rest and regroup. Yesterday, after running for 12 hours and only covering about 50 km’s (with constant massive climbs and descents, river crossings and getting lost a couple of times) our over night stop was nowhere in sight at sunset.
We (Dave Lyall and I) decided not to try and risk bumbling across rocky beaches and rivers in the dark and. Knocked on the door of a hut to get directions and advice. The result was a negotiated lift in a ancient bakkie with absent breaks and passenger door and v defective steering mechanism. On the first massive downhill on steeply rutted track I wandered briefly if braving the beaches would not have been preferable. An hour later after manoevering along impossible roads in a completely unroadworthy vehicle I was marvelling at the skill of our driver (Aas). He finally admitted that driving any further was impossible and parked on a river bank.
We crossed the river in the dark and walked a further couple of kms with our driver as a guide before we were safely depositted at the Kraal Backpackers at Mpande at around 8pm. I was astounded by the goodwill of our guide and taxi driver. Rest day is nearly over and we will be up at 5 to get back to where we caught our taxi on Sun and then on to Port St Johns. Yeeehaaaa!
